Há pouco tempo escrevi sobre o EP “Sign With Blood” dos Gregos Terra IncΩgnita, um trabalho que serviu de introdução ao álbum “Fragments of a Ruined Mind”, segundo registo da banda após um hiato de cerca de 7 anos lançado através do selo Grego Symmetric Records no passado mês de Novembro. Vamos ver o que este regresso nos trouxe.
“Fragments of a Ruined Mind” é um álbum conceptual baseado em Strahd, personagem retirada de Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. Para quem não conhece a história, resumidamente esta conta como o nobre Strahd von Zarovich se tornou um notável guerreiro que, a certa altura da sua vida, sentiu que a tinha desperdiçado. Esse estado sombrio levou-o a conquistar a região de Barovia, tornando-a o seu reino e rodeando-se de familiares seus (incluindo o irmão Sergei) para o ajudarem a governar. Algum tempo depois apaixona-se pela jovem Tatyana, contudo esta prefere o irmão como seu futuro esposo. Num momento de frustração Strahd faz um pacto de sangue com a Morte; no dia do casamento do seu irmão, mata-o e persegue Tatyana até esta se atirar para o vazio da morte das muralhas de Ravenloft. Ele foi abatido pelas setas dos guardas do castelo mas não morreu, tornando-se nesse momento o vampiro pelo qual é conhecido como supremo reinante de Barovia.
Os Terra IncΩgnita conseguem transportar para este álbum os diversos momentos desta história graças à forma como moldam o seu metal tradicional, alternando tempos e instrumentos para melhor transmitir os episódios contados em cada faixa: guitarras “graves” para momentos de angústia (“The Word”); “A Day Without Loss” é uma faixa curta e triste, que reflete a sensação de vazio sentida pela personagem e para vincar esse sentimento optaram por piano e violino para instrumentos; “The Conqueror” alterna entre guitarras rápidas e furiosas com momentos mais compassados; “Life Begins Again” começa como uma balada ao bom estilo dos anos 80 mas escala depois para uma faixa robusta, com peso e compassada, um claro exemplo onde a banda consegue conjugar na perfeição o clássico e o contemporâneo; “My Ruined Mind” alterna entre uma toada mais doom e o metal tradicional. Para além disto tudo não nos podemos esquecer da fantástica voz de Billy Vass cujo timbre nos trás à memória nomes como Geoff Tate ou Eric Adams, enquadrando-se muito bem no estilo dos Terra IncΩgnita e contribuindo muito para a musicalidade da banda.
Aquando do EP “Sign With Blood” fiquei com a impressão que havia uma necessidade dos Terra IncΩgnita mostrarem do que eram capazes, muito por força das 4 faixas algo distintas em termos sonoros, o que poderia levar a um álbum confuso. Mas a verdade é que este “Fragments of a Ruined Mind” é um trabalho musicalmente bem estruturado, com um bom equilíbrio entre a vertente mais clássica do heavy metal e elementos mais modernos. O facto de a história girar em torno de uma personagem fantástica confere a este álbum um toque de nostalgia ao mesmo tempo que se pode perfeitamente aplicar a situações quotidianas. Para além de marcar o regresso dos Terra IncΩgnita este álbum marca também uma (boa) estreia do selo Symmetric Records.

Some time ago I wrote about Greek Terra IncΩgnita’s EP “Sign With Blood”, a work that act as an introduction to the album “Fragments of a Ruined Mind”, sophomore record of the band after nearly a 7 years hiatus released via Greek label Symmetric Records last November. Let’s see what this comeback brought us.
“Fragments of a Ruined Mind” is a conceptual album based on the character of Strahd, taken from Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. For those of you who don’t know the story, in short terms it tells how the noble Strahd von Zarovich became an exceptional warrior and, at some point of his life, felt he had wasted her. That gloomy state led him to conquer the region of Barovia, making it his kingdom and surrounding himself with members of his family (including his brother Sergei) to help him rule. Some time after he fell in love by young Tatyana however she chooses Sergei as her future husband. In a moment of frustration Strahd deals a death pact with Death; on the day of his brother’s wedding he kills him and pursues Tatyana until she jumps into the emptiness of death from the walls of Ravencroft. He was shot down by castle guards’ arrows but he didn’t died, turning at that moment into the vampire for which he his known as supreme ruler of Barovia.

Terra IncΩgnita manage to transport to this album all the several moments of this history thanks to the way they shape his traditional metal, changing times and instruments to better pass on the episodes told on each track; “severe” guitars for moments of anguish (“The Word”); “A Day Without Loss” is a short and sad track that reflects the sensation of emptiness felt by the character and to crease that feeling they opt for piano and violin as instruments; “The Conqueror” varies between fast and furious guitars with more paced moments; “Life Begins Again” starts as a ballad 80’s style but escalates afterwords to a more robust track, with weight and pace, a good example where the band can combine perfectly the classic with the contemporary; “My Ruined Mind” alternates doom with a more traditional heavy metal approach. Besides all this we cannot forget Billy Vass fantastic voice whose timbre brings back to memory names likes Geoff Tate or Eric Adams, fitting very well in Terra IncΩgnita’ style and contributing a lot to their musicality.
At the time of the EP “Sign With Blood” I got the impression there was a need for Terra IncΩgnita to show what they were capable of, mainly because of the 4 distinct tracks regarding sonority, who could lead to a confuse album. But the truth is that this “Fragments of a Ruined Mind” is a work musically well structured, with a good balance between the more classical approach to heavy metal and modern elements. The fact that the history circles around a fantasy character gives this album a touch of nostalgia at the same time it can fit perfectly in modern day situations. Besides representing the return of Terra IncΩgnita this album marks also a (good) debut for Symmetric Records seal.
