In a cold January night Portuguese sang rock came to town to heat up the scene. Last 19th 100ADN, O Incrível Homem Bomba (OIHB) and Meu General joined forces to cheer up Hard Club’ Sala 2.
From the ashes of Skanya 100ADN was born; Nuno, Tiago, Xavier, Ricardo and Sérgio got together again under a new name and some new songs to continue where the EP “|SK|” (2014) had left them. This debut at Hard Club presented a quintets eager to show their alternative rock, giving the motto to a lively night.
5 years have passed since I saw OIHM, at the time on the stage of Plano B to present the debut EP “Porque o Mundo Não é Quadrado”. The world may not be square but the stage was certainly small enough for them to freely expand their indie rock/punk, being clear this night that with a few more inches OIHB show would gain another visual dimension. All took advantage of that detail to brighten up the performance, from a very expressive and playful Pedro Martins to a Bruno Cruz that once more proved to be a guitar virtuoso. Not even the setbacks at the beginning (and somewhere in the middle) of the concert with Bruno’s guitar power dampen the joy or stole energy to the rest of the evening. The obvious highlight was to the album “Mutação”, released last August, nevertheless the band played some song from the EP that, at the time, had the collaboration of guest musicians. One of them was Ana Azevedo who lend her voice to the song “Olá Boa Noite”; back then she rose on stage to sing along with Pedro, this time he was the one coming down to the crowd and pulleing out Ana to an improvised duet.
Meu General was one of those band I was willing to see for quite some time but still hadn’t been possible. Gilberto Pinto’s project exists for 11 years now and with 2 releases, being the last “Vinte Ao Vivo” who’s some sort of compilation of some of the band’s hits recorded live; there’s a new release scheduled for this year. This return to Hard Club turned out to be a little troubled because of the minor setbacks they had with the drums and previous OIHB technical problems; all of that led to almost zero dead times and even some songs were left to play. Even so we listened to killer songs like “Morte Lenta” (dedicated to Zé Pedro from Xutos e Pontapés), “Limite” or “Televisão” in a concert that almost looked like a .45 rpm. Energy, grip, easy lyrics and catchy guitars are images of a band that didn’t disappointed my expectations prior to the concert, for sure a band to see again soon.
If there were still any doubts of Portuguese rock quality they were shattered with these 3 bands performances. From the comeback of ones to the continuity of others we breed good sonority. Thank you to the bands for the performances, to Bruno Cruz for the invitation and to Hard Club for the given facilities.
