Portugal já é um destino habitual nas digressões dos Dream Theater, como voltou a acontecer no fim-de-semana de 1 e 2 de Fevereiro. Desta vez a digressão “The Distance Over Time Tour – Celebrating 20 Years of Scenes From A Memory” trazia não 1 mas 2 álbuns para apresentar aos fãs.
Os concertos desta digressão podem-se dividir em 2 momentos: uma primeira parte dedicada quase exclusivamente ao último trabalho “Distance Over Time” e uma segunda parte para tocarem na íntegra “Metropolis part 2: Scenes From A Memory”, álbum que catapultou a banda para uma carreira de sucessos. Do último álbum tocaram apenas 4 músicas intercaladas com 2 temas clássicos: “A Nightmare to Remember” (retirada de “Black Clouds & Silver Linings” de 2009) e “In the Presence of Enemies, Part I” (retirada de “Systematic Chaos” de 2007, um dos meus álbuns favoritos). No início do concerto o som estava um pouco “esquisito”, para quem (como eu) estava no photo pit parecia que havia algum desfasamento entre o som da música e a voz de LaBrie; felizmente isso foi corrigido, com “Paralyzed” a marcar o momento. Após esse tema tempo para LaBrie dirigir algumas palavras ao público, agradecendo não só a sua presença ali como também elogiando o nosso país. Aproveitou ainda para questionar quem dos presentes esteve no concerto de 2000 onde tocaram pela primeira vez “Metropolis part 2: Scenes From A Memory”.
Após um intervalo, o regresso da banda para o tão esperado “segundo concerto” dedicado a “Metropolis part 2: Scenes From A Memory”. Mais do que querer escutar a banda, o público esperava mesmo era por este momento em que iriam ouvir um álbum que se tornou intemporal. Essa avidez era corroborada pelo acompanhamento que faziam em certos trechos, quer seja a cantar ou simplesmente a usufruir do momento. A par das músicas (respeitado o alinhamento do álbum), passavam por detrás da banda as já usuais animações e outras especialmente feitas para este evento onde era narrada a conceptualidade do álbum, num espetáculo visual característico dos Dream Theater e que muito nos agrada. A par da atuação íamos tendo os momentos “individuais” de maior recorte técnico, com Rudess a largar os teclados e a pegar na sua “keytar”, Petrucci a destacar-se com os seus solos ou Mangini a dar uso a totalidade do seu extenso kit de bateria. Após terminarem de tocar “Metropolis part 2: Scenes From A Memory”, a banda retirou-se do palco mas voltou pouco depois para um encore, agora novamente de regresso ao último trabalho com o tema “At Wit's End”.
É sempre um prazer ver os Dream Theater (“apenas” o fizemos por 3 vezes) mas este foi especial por ter sido possível fotografá-los de perto. Portugal is already a regular destination on Dream Theater tours, as it happened again on the weekend of February 1st and 2nd. This time the tour “The Distance Over Time Tour - Celebrating 20 Years of Scenes From A Memory” brought not 1 but 2 albums to present to the fans.
The concerts on this tour can be divided into 2 moments: a first part dedicated almost exclusively to the last work “Distance Over Time” and a second part to play in full “Metropolis part 2: Scenes From A Memory”, album that catapulted the band for a successful career. From the last album they played only 4 songs interspersed with 2 classic themes: “A Nightmare to Remember” (taken from “Black Clouds & Silver Linings” from 2009) and “In the Presence of Enemies, Part I” (taken from “Systematic Chaos” from 2007, one of my favorite albums). At the beginning of the concert the sound was a little “weird” for who (like me) was in the photo pit it seemed that there was some mismatch between the sound of the music and LaBrie's voice; fortunately this was corrected, with “Paralyzed” marking the moment. After that theme, time for LaBrie to say a few words to the public, thanking them not only for their presence there, but also praising our country. He also took the opportunity to question who attended the 2000 concert where they played “Metropolis part 2: Scenes From A Memory” for the first time.
After a break, the band returns to the long-awaited “second concert” dedicated to “Metropolis part 2: Scenes From A Memory”. More than wanting to listen to the band, the audience was expecting the moment when they would hear an album that became timeless. This eagerness was corroborated by the accompaniment they did in certain sections, whether it be by singing along or simply living the moment. Along with the songs (respecting the alignment of the album), the usual animations and others specially made for this event were passed behind the band, where the album's conceptuality was narrated, in a visual show characteristic of Dream Theater and which we like very much. In addition to the performance, we were having the usual technical “solo” moments, with Rudess dropping the keyboards and taking his “keytar”, Petrucci standing out with his solos or Mangini using the whole of his huge drum kit. After they finished playing “Metropolis part 2: Scenes From A Memory”, the band withdrew from the stage but soon returned to an encore, now again returning to their last work with the theme “At Wit's End”.
It is always a pleasure to see Dream Theater (we “only” did it 3 times) but this was special because it was possible to photograph them up close.
