Interviewing Haeredium - "Ascension", the band and the future

Os Franceses Haeredium lançaram recentemente “Ascension”, segundo álbum no qual podemos perceber a sua abordagem multicultural. Isso despertou a curiosidade em descobrir mais sobre uma banda que tem a capacidade de ir ainda mais longe na cena.

Davi: Olá Haeredium, obrigado por terem tempo para responderem às minhas questões.

Haeredium: Olá Davi! Estamos muito contentes por te conhecer! É um prazer para nós responder às tuas questões.

D: Os Haeredium [ainda] não são muito conhecidos por cá por isso comecem por se apresentar.

H: Nós somos uma banda de folk metal Francesa, composta por 5 músicos: Nicolas (bateria), Quentin (guitarra e voz), Rémi (baixo), Alexia (teclado e flauta) e Sébastien (guitarra e voz principal). Nós formamo-nos em 2010 e lançamos dois álbuns: “Aurora” (2014) e “Ascension” (2019) através da editora Art Gates Records.

D: Cruzei-me com o vosso [fantástico] “Aurora” (ainda no meu Mp3) pouco tempo depois do lançamento de “Ascension” por isso estava bastante ansioso em ouvi-lo e analisá-lo. Um dos aspectos que aprecio no vosso som é que não são folk nem metal, no entanto são ambos. Como é que trabalham nessa simbiose e a tornam numa fórmula de sucesso?

H: Eu descreveria o processo de criação como algo muito simples: escolhendo todos os sons e estilos que gosto e misturá-los a todos! Pessoalmente, sou muito apaixonado pela música tradicional e instrumental de todo o mundo e de todas as culturas. Isto é basicamente a criação de uma “atmosfera” com a música, a criação de algo que te vai deixar alegre ou triste, sonhador ou nervoso, a querer fazer uma festa ou a estar sozinho. Eu tento criar essas atmosferas e, ao juntar diversas sonoridades como, por exemplo, um riff pesado de guitarra com a alegria melodiosa do violino, obténs uma mistura de emoções e é isto que eu acho interessante. Faz com que o ouvinte sinta algo fora do normal e se questione. É isto que a música é.

D: Vocês têm a capacidade de cantar em diversas línguas o que dá um toque especial à paisagem musical. Isso foi pensado de forma deliberada para funcionar dessa maneira ou foi algo que ocorreu de forma espontânea? Melhor ainda, é algo que podemos apontar como uma marca distintiva dos Haeredium?

H: Bem, nós não somos a única banda a fazer isso, e certamente não a primeira, mas acho que é algo de certo modo incomum na cena do metal em geral. Este tipo de mistura é, de facto, mais usual precisamente no folk metal. Para nós no início, enquanto metaleiros e ouvintes antes de músicos, a língua Inglesa aparece como uma regra e apenas algumas bandas se aventuraram a cantar em Francês porque não é uma língua para o rock’n’roll, antes para o romantismo! Tentámos e ficámos satisfeitos com o resultado por isso decidimos ter algumas canções na nossa língua nativa, tanto no primeiro como no segundo álbum.

D: Estão neste momento a promover “Ascension” e, obviamente, a tocá-lo o mais possível; está Portugal nos vosso planos?

H: Sempre que o público pede e um promotor/evento nos queira lá, estará nos nossos planos! Eu pessoalmente estive uma vez em Portugal e adorei!

D: Esta nova parceria com a Art Gates Records é seguramente um novo passo para a banda, o Iván tem vindo a fazer um excelente trabalho na cena. Vão trabalhar juntos apenas para este lançamento ou será para continuar?

H: O contrato com a Art Gates Records foi seguramente um passo em frente na nossa carreira, dando-nos uma nova dimensão na capacidade de promover a nossa música. Tendo a banda como parte da editora demonstra que, em primeiro lugar, eles gostaram de nós e confiaram no nosso potencial. Por estes motivos o trabalho em comum poderá muito bem continuar no futuro.

D: Pensando mais acerca do futuro… em “Aurora” vocês mostraram qualidade, com “Ascension” refinaram-na e provaram que não foi obra do acaso. Colocaram a fasquia altas para vocês; podemos esperar um próximo trabalho no nível destes ou vão misturar ainda mais folclore? Talvez “indo” para fora da Europa?

H: Este é um ponto interessante. O album “Ascension” foi, na verdade, difícil de gravar, tecnicamente mais duro que o anterior “Aurora”. De momento, apenas posso dizer que o próximo trabalho vai ser mais orientado para o folk e ainda mais pessoal, ou por outras palavras mais “emocional”. É difícil de dizer para já mas penso que será uma mistura dos dois álbuns. Espera e verás!

D: Mais uma vez, agradeço o tempo despendido para responderem às minhas questões e fazer com que todos conheçam melhor os Haeredium. Eu geralmente deixo a última para que os meus entrevistados possam falar à vontade; este é o vosso tempo, usem-no!

French Haeredium have recently released “Ascension”, sophomore album in which we could perceive their multicultural approach. That arouse the will to discover some more of a band that has the ability to go further in the scene.

Davi: Hello Haeredium, thank for taking the time to answer my questions.

Haeredium: Hello Davi! We are very pleased to meet you! It is our pleasure to answer to your questions.

D: Haeredium aren’t [yet] known here so please start by introducing yourselves.

H: We are a folk metal band from France, made of 5 musicians: Nicolas (drums), Quentin (guitar and vocals), Rémi (bass guitar), Alexia (keys and flutes) and Sébastien (guitar and lead vocals). The band was formed in 2010 and we had two albums out: “Aurora” (2014) and “Ascension” (2019), released through the label Art Gates Records.

D: I came across your [fantastic] debut “Aurora” (still with me on my Mp3) shortly before the release of “Ascension” so was quite eager to listen and review it. One of the aspects I enjoy in your sound is that you’re neither folk nor metal yet you are both. How do you work on that symbioses and make it a successful formula?

H: I would describe the process of creation as something rather simple: choosing all the sounds and styles that I like and blending them together! I am personally very passionate about traditional music and instruments from all over the world and from all cultures. This is mainly about creating an “atmosphere” with the music, creating something that will make you happy or sad, dreamy or nervous, wanting to party or wanting to be alone. I try to recreate these atmospheres, and by putting together very different sounds, like for example heavy guitar riffs with joyful violin melodies you get mixed emotions, and this is what I find interesting. It make the listener feel something unusual and question themselves. This is what music is all about.

D: You have the ability to sing in several languages which adds an important role to the musical landscape. Was it deliberate thought to work that way or just something that occurred normally? Better yet, is it something we can point out from Hearedium as a distinctive mark?

H: Well, we are not the one and only band to do this, and surely not the first, but I think it is still something rather uncommon in the general metal scene. This type of mix is, in fact, more often used in folk metal precisely. For us in the beginning, as metal heads and listeners before musicians, the English language appeared as the norm, and only a few metal bands attempt the adventure of writing lyrics in French, because it is just not a language for rock'n'roll, more for romanticism! We tried and were satisfied with the result, so we decided to have several song in our native language, on our first album, and on the second as well.

D: You are now promoting “Ascension” and obviously playing it as much as possible; is Portugal in your plans?

H: Whenever the audience is demanding and a concert/show organisation is wanting to book us, it will be in our plans! I have personally been to Portugal once and I loved it!

D: This new joint-venture with Art Gates Records is surely a plus to the band, Iván has been doing an excellent job in the scene. Are you working together just for this release or will continue further more?

H: The deal with Art Gates Records has clearly been a new step in our career, allowing us to give a new dimension to the promotion of our music. Having the band being part of the label demonstrates that they trusted us in the first place, that they liked what we do and believe in our potential. For these reasons the common work might very well continue after this album.

D: Thinking more about the future… in “Aurora” you’ve shown quality, with “Ascension” you’ve refined it and proved it didn’t happen by chance. You have set the bar high for yourselves now; can we expect a new album to be leveled by this one or are you thinking in mixing even more folklore? Perhaps “moving” outside Europe?

H: This is an interesting point. The album “Ascension” has, indeed, been difficult to record, being technically harder that the first one “Aurora”. All I can say for the moment, is that the third album will still be folk oriented, but even more personal, or more “emotional” so to speak. It is hard to say for the moment, but I think it might be a logic mix of the first two albums in a certain way. Wait and see!

D: Again, I thank you for your time to answer my questions and let everyone know more about Haeredium. I usually leave the last one for my interview to speak freely; this is your moment, take it!
