Kalahari - Theia

Em 2018 os Italianos Kalahari lançaram o EP “Reburn”, trabalho de estreia que deu a conhecer uma banda que tem na sua sonoridade um misto de contemporaneidade com uma veia mais clássica do metal. Composições com ganchos acutilantes e solos apelativos, vocais repartidos entre limpo e gutural e cadências que vão do mid tempo ao up tempo fazem o cartão-de-visita deste jovem quinteto Italiano. Curiosamente, este novo registo “Theia” apresenta no geral uma sonoridade mais negra e triste, fruto talvez da temática escolhida para o lirísmo. Isso não quer de todo dizer que seja mau, muito pelo contrário, apenas mostra maior versatilidade na composição e uma maior abrangência em estilos.

Analisando “Theia” de forma independente, o meu destaque vai para “Followers Of The Lich”, faixa com uma entrada mais épica que deriva depois numa toada mais groove bem preenchida com um solo, terminando de forma mais compassada e lenta com as guitarras a vincar bem essa passagem. “Zombie Nation” é curta e direta, parece uma faixa que tem pressa em terminar mas que é plena de groove e ritmo (tem ali algo que lembra Rob Zombie). Um pormenor que apreciei bastante foi o som do baixo em “Cabled Core”.

Com apenas 3 anos de existência e 2 lançamentos, os Kalahari mostram um estilo sonoro que vai buscar inspiração aos clássicos mas cujo resultado se apresenta moderno, coeso e equilibrado. Nestes tempos conturbados não se sabe muito bem qual o futuro da cena underground mas estamos na presença de uma banda que pode muito bem vingar com sucesso.

In 2018, Italian band Kalahari released the EP “Reburn”, a debut work that made known a band that has in its sound a mix of contemporaneity with a more classic metal vein. Compositions with sharp hooks and appealing solos, vocals divided between clean and guttural and cadences that go from mid tempo to up tempo make the business card of this young Italian quintet. Interestingly, this new record “Theia” presents, in general, a darker and sadder sound, perhaps the result of the theme chosen for lyricism. This does not mean at all that it is bad, quite the contrary, it just shows greater versatility in composition and a greater range in styles.

Analyzing “Theia” independently, my highlight goes to “Followers Of The Lich”, a track with a more epic entry that then drifts into a more groove tone well filled with a solo, ending in a more measured and slow way with the guitars creasing well this passage. "Zombie Nation" is short and direct, it looks like a track that is in a hurry to finish but is full of groove and rhythm (there is something there that resembles Rob Zombie). One detail that I really appreciated was the sound of the bass in “Cabled Core”.

With only 3 years of existence and 2 releases, Kalahari show a sound style that gets inspired by the classics but whose result is modern, cohesive and balanced. In these troubled times it is not very clear what the future of the underground scene is but we are in the presence of a band that can very well succeed.
