Mind Driller - Involution

Depois de terem lançado “Red industrial” em 2012 e “Zirkus” em 2016, os Espanhóis Mind Driller lançaram em Março passado o seu terceiro álbum, “Involution”, desta vez debaixo do selo Art Gates Records.

Apesar de haver muito boas bandas dentro do espectro do metal industrial, continua a ser “normal” uma comparação com os Alemães Rammstein fruto do seu mediatismo e peso no género. Este é um cliché muitas vezes usado mas do qual vou tentar demarcar-me ao longo da minha análise.

Vou começar pelas vozes; um dos pormenores dos Mind Driller é o uso de 3(!) vocalizações distintas. Esta é uma das características do chamado “metal moderno”, o uso de 3 vozes que normalmente se distribuem por: feminina, limpa e gutural. Aqui temos Estefania Aledo com um timbre que faz lembrar Cristina Scabbia, ficando Dani e V. com as vozes masculinas; variam em intensidade e força mas são todas limpas, com partes gritadas. Ainda neste capítulo temos o idioma em que cantam. Sendo que [quase] todas as músicas têm o Inglês como língua principal, as partes a cargo de Dani são cantadas em Alemão (“M4N1K1” é a exceção sendo toda cantada em Espanhol). Isto talvez se prenda com o facto de o industrial ser mais comumente associado ao idioma Alemão mas não deixa de ser invulgar esta opção em todas as músicas. Musicalmente as músicas exploram várias possibilidades dentro do industrial, indo desde uma vertente mais rock/gótico de “Kianda” até ao groove de “Rotten”. Essa maior abrangência faz também com que o ritmo varie não só em intensidade mas também em peso, mantendo contudo uma maior predominância para uma toada mais uptempo, caracterizada por bateria e baixo fortes, bem acompanhados pelo sintetizador e guitarras. A nível visual, pelo que pude apreciar nos vídeos mantém a tendência do género da exploração visual a par da música.

Álbum agressivo pela sonoridade em geral mas melodicamente bem contrabalançado pela voz feminina e algumas partes de sintetizador, “Involution” versa sobre a evolução regressiva da Humanidade ao mesmo tempo que mostra uma evolução progressiva dos Mind Driller. Esta estreia na Art Gates revela-se positiva, não só pela projecção que podem obter mas também pela qualidade demonstrada neste trabalho.

After releasing “Red industrial” in 2012 and “Zirkus” in 2016, Spanish Mind Driller released past March their third album “Involution”, this time under Art Gates Records seal.

Despite there are lots of great bands in industrial metal scene, it’s still “normal” a comparison with Germans Rammstein due to their mediatism and influence in the genre. This is a commonly used cliche to which I’ll try to apart myself throughout my review.

I’ll start with the voices; one of Mind Driller’s details is the use of 3(!) distinct voices. This is one characteristic of the so called “modern metal”, the use of 3 voices usually distributed as: feminine, clean and guttural. Here we have Estefania Aledo with a timbre that resembles Cristina Scabbia leaving Dani and V. with the male voices; they vary in intensity and strength but are all clean with screamed parts. Still in this subject we have the language in which they sing. Being that [almost] every songs have English as main language, the parts sang by Dani are in German (“M4N1K1” is an exception, it’s entirely sang in Spanish). this my be due to the fact that industrial is usually more related to German language still it’s an unusual option to do this in all songs. Musically the songs explore several possibilities within industrial, going from a more rock/goth approach in “Kianda” to the groove in “Rotten”. That wider coverage also makes the rhythm to vary not only in intensity but also in weight, yet keeping a bigger tendency to a more uptempo pace, marked with strong bass and drums, well accompanied by the synth and guitars. In terms of visual, for what I could evaluate from the videos is that they keep the gender tendency to explore visual along with the music.

In general this is an aggressive album yet melodically well counterbalanced by the feminine voice and in some parts the synth, “Involution” focus on Humanity regressive evolution at the same time it shows Mind Driller’s progressive evolution. This debut in Art Gates show itself as positive, not only for the projection they might get but also for the quality shown in this work.
