Scarleth - Vortex

Os Ucranianos Scarleth uniram-se à Italiana Rockshot Records para o lançamento do seu terceiro álbum, “Vortex”. Nas palavras de Victor Morozov (guitarrista) “Este é o nosso melhor álbum até agora. As novas músicas são apelativas e fáceis de lembrar”. Bom, soa um pouco a cliché, vamos a ver quanto disso é verdade.

Em todos os subgéneros do metal (e não só) é normal as bandas fundirem diversos elementos por forma a criar uma sonoridade que, de algum modo, sobressaia dentro do género e lhes garanta algum destaque. Isso nem sempre resulta, acabando muitas vezes por levar a alguma inconsistência sonora que se reflete nos álbuns criados, não os tornando apelativos. No caso dos Scarleth, assentes numa base power metal melódica adicionam elementos de outros subgéneros como sejam o heavy mais tradicional, folk, gótico ou o clássico. Essa influências notam-se logo no álbum de estreia “Break The Silence”, contudo nesse trabalho também se notou alguma fragilidade na composição. Já no seguinte “The Silver Lining” é notória uma evolução a esse nível; o modo como as melodias são criadas denota mais cuidado nos arranjos. Neste trabalho é também apresentada nova vocalista, por isso aproveito para falar já. Não que a voz de Julia Elyashova seja má mas não me soou como adequada à sonoridade da banda; já a escolha de Oksana Element mostrou-se bastante acertada com um timbre bem adequado, quer ao nível da melodia quer do tom, fazendo-se notar e conseguindo preencher muito bem as músicas. Para este “Vortex” Ekaterina Kapshuk foi a escolhida; tal como no anterior também aqui se revelou uma boa escolha, com o seu timbre mais forte imprime um cunho diferente às composições e enquadra-se bem na toada mais up tempo que se verifica neste álbum. Voltando à sonoridade, outra ideia que fica no ar depois de escutar “Vortex” é a de um ambiente mais negro em algumas músicas, provavelmente muito por força da voz de Ekaterina (isso pode-se perceber na parte inicial da faixa “No Return”); por outro lado também se nota um maior uso dos sintetizadores, o que acaba por estar em linha com uma toada mais up tempo. Em termos de influências, “Passion” introduz um toque de swing dos Balcãs; “Escape From Your Embrace” tem um toque oriental, com uma forte componente melódica e destaque para o teclado; “Остання Зоря” (“O Último Amanhecer”) é claramente de inspiração folk e é a única música (em todos os álbuns) cantada em Ucraniano; “Final Curtain” é outra faixa com uma componente melódica (aqui mais progressiva) mais vincada. Ao longo de todo o álbum é notória a predominância para o progressivo, com escalas de guitarra e teclado; os riffs são bastante apelativos, os solos de guitarra também e aprecio especialmente as passagens bem audíveis do baixo.

Depois de ouvirmos “Vortex” várias vezes compreende-se melhor as palavras de Victor. Este terceiro álbum é sem dúvida o melhor que os Scarleth lançaram até agora, onde para além da melhoria ao nível da composição um dos pontos pontos de destaque é seguramente a vocalização. Aqui reside apenas uma dúvida: se iremos ter um quarto registo com Ekaterina ou manter-se-á a tendência de trocar a cada novo álbum; por mim, sem dúvida que escolhia a primeira opção.

Ukrainians Scarleth have teamed up with Italian Rockshot Records for the release of their third album, "Vortex". In the words of Victor Morozov (guitarist) “It is our best work so far. The new songs are catchy and easy to remember”. Well, it sounds a little cliche so let's see how much of that is true.

In all subgenres of metal (and not only) it is normal for bands to merge various elements in order to create a sound that somehow stands out within the genre and gives them some prominence. This does not always work, often leading to some sonic inconsistency that is reflected in the albums created, not making them appealing. In the case of Scarleth, based on a melodic power metal base they add elements of other subgenres such as the more traditional heavy, folk, Gothic or classic. These influences are noticeable soon on the debut album “Break The Silence”, however in this work there was also some fragility in the composition. Already in the following "The Silver Lining" is noticeable an evolution at this level; the way melodies are created denotes more care in arrangements. In this work is also presented a new singer, so I take now the opportunity to talk about that. Not that Julia Elyashova's voice is bad but it didn't sound appropriate to the band's sound; the choice of Oksana Element proved to be quite correct with a very appropriate timbre, both in terms of melody and tone, making it noted and being able to fill the songs very well. For this “Vortex” Ekaterina Kapshuk was chosen; as in the previous one, it was also a good choice here, with its strongest timbre it gives a different imprint to the compositions and fits in with the most up tempo pace of this album. Getting back to sound, another idea that hangs in the air after listening to "Vortex" is that of a darker ambiance in some songs, probably due to Ekaterina's voice (this can be seen in the early part of the track "No Return"); on the other hand there is also a greater use of synthesizers, which turns out to be in line with a longer tone. In terms of influences, “Passion” introduces a swinging Balkan touch; “Escape From Your Embrace” has an oriental feel, with a strong melodic component and highlight to the keyboard; “Остання Зоря” (“The Last Dawn”) is clearly folk-inspired and is the only song (on all albums) sung in Ukrainian; “Final Curtain” is another track with a more pronounced (and also more progressive) melodic component. Throughout the album the predominance for the progressive is notorious, with guitar and keyboard scales; The riffs are quite appealing, the guitar solos too, and I especially appreciate the very audible passages of the bass.

After hearing “Vortex” several times, we can understand Victor's words better. This third album is undoubtedly the best Scarleth have released so far, where besides the improvement in the composition one of the highlights is surely the vocalization. Here is just one question: whether we will have a fourth record with Ekaterina or will the tendency to change with each new album will prevail; for me, no doubt that I would chose the first option.
