Serrabulho - Porntugal

Foi-me dada a oportunidade de escutar o mais recente álbum de Serrabulho, “Porntugal” (Portuguese Vagitarian Gastronomy), sendo este o terceiro álbum da banda. Como poderia eu recusar? Além de gostar imenso de Serrabulho, sou filha de uma transmontana, tendo vivido lá perto de Vila Real, de onde os nossos caros Serrabulho são originários. Por isso até entendo algumas das expressões faladas nas canções.

Então, que dizer do álbum dos nossos queridos transmontanos? A capa foi elaborada por Marta Peneda que já foi responsável pela arte das capas anteriores e que se adequa perfeitamente ao tema do álbum; o layout foi acompanhado por André Henriques. O álbum foi produzido pelos Blind & Lost Studios e lançado através da alemã Rotten Roll Rex. Este álbum apresenta um dos melhores grindcore de Portugal. Todo o álbum é uma panóplia de sons; temos de tudo: gutural, guitarras com riffs poderosos, instrumentos não usuais, diálogos à Trás-os-Montes e até Freaky o chihuahua. Nada é o que parece. Temos aqui um álbum que é uma carícia para os ouvidos. Ao escutar o álbum encontro alegria e boa disposição, alguma sátira e muitas tiradas mesmo “à Norte”! O resultado encanta qualquer fã de grindcore extremo e atrevo-me a dizer a outro tipo de fãs de música mais pesada. Têm uma grande variedade de vocalizações, desde as guturais a uns geniais grunhidos, que encaixam perfeitamente na atmosfera das músicas a lembrar os porquinhos alegres na sua pocilga, a diálogos de mulheres do povo, crianças e homens de barba rija, misturando também cantos tradicionais transmontanos, onde se vê claramente a tentativa de incorporarem a herança da música portuguesa nas suas composições; a meu ver penso que o fizeram com grande sucesso. Relativamente ao instrumental podem esperar riffs eletrizantes e poderosos, um som rápido e intenso, com uma bateria que tem uma intensidade do catano e que arrasa perfeitamente. Consultando o press release da banda verifico que foram utilizados estes instrumentos: a rabeca, gaitas de foles, tarota (da família do oboé), adufe (tambor quadrado Português) e até uma pandeireta Galega. O melhor instrumento são definitivamente as conchas de vieira (o molusco).

Com isto em mente, Serrabulho entrega-nos neste álbum uma bela obra onde se sente que foi colocado todo o amor e carinho possível na sua elaboração. Se és fã de grindcore ou até nem por isso, mas queres passar uns valentes minutos a sorrir e a abanar a cabeça ou até bailar, compra, faz download ou vai ao Spotify e aprecia a cacofonia de sons que estes transmontanos nos trazem. Na minha humilde opinião é um sólido 8 em 10. C’Mássim, ide ouvir este álbum já!

Por terem colaborado na criação deste belo álbum os Serrabulho, no seu já falado press release, deixaram agradecimentos a Ricardo Santos, Manuel Meirinhos, a Susana Lima e Hugo Picamilho e ainda a Tiago Pereira e a Música Portuguesa Gostar Dela Própria, por captação de sons para a canção “Pito Sem Penas” (que é a minha favorita) e “Dingleberry Ice Cream”, e como tal a Metal em Portugal agradece também!

I’ve been given the chance to listen to “Porntugal” (Portuguese Vagitarian Gastronomy), Serrabulho’s third album. How could I refuse? Besides enjoying Serrabulho a lot my mother is from Trás-Os-Montes and I’ve lived nearby Vila Real, from were the band is originated from. Because of that I even understand some of the local expressions mentioned on the lyrics.

So, what to say about our dearest Transmontano’s album? The art cover was made by Marta Peneda who was also responsible for the previous ones and fits perfectly in the album’s theme; the layout was supervised by André Henriques. The album was produced by Blind & Lost Studios and released through German label Rotten Roll Rex. This album presents one of the finest Portuguese grindcore. The entire album is a sonorous panoply; we have it all: guttural, powerful guitar riffs, unusual instruments, local Trás-os-Montes dialogs and even Freaky, the chihuahua. Nothing is what it seams. We are in the presence of an album that is a caress for the ears. While listening to the album I found happiness and liveliness, some satire and lots of “Northern” sayings! The result is a delight for any extreme grindcore and I dare to say also to other heavier genre fans. They have great vocal variety, from guttural to genial grunts, who fit perfectly in the music ambiance reminding little happy pigs at their pigpen, local women dialogues, children and strong bearded man, also mixing traditional local folklore, where we can clearly perceive the attempt to incorporate Portuguese musical heritage in their compositions; I do believe they’ve done it successfully. Regarding the instrumental you can expect electrifying and powerful riffs, a fast and intense sound with shattering drums sounding tremendously intense. By looking at the press kit I see that that band used several instruments such as: fiddle, bagpipes, tarota (an instrument of the oboe family), adufe (square Portuguese drum) and even a Galician tambourine. The best instrument is definitely the scallop shelves.

With this in mind, Serrabulho deliver us in this album a fine work where we can feel all the possible love and care have been put into its preparation. If you’r a grindcore fan or even not quite but still want to spend some good time laughing while headbanging or even dancing, buy it, download it or go to Spotify and appreciate the sound cacophony that these transmontanos give us. In my humble opinion it’s a solid 8 out of 10. “C’Mássim” (translator's note: “head back home”), go and listen to this album now!
