Sober Truth - Psychosis

“Psychosis” é o 4º álbum de originais (5º trabalho contando com o EP “New Slavery World”) dos Alemães Sober Truth; 2 anos depois de “Locust ▼ Lunatic Asylum” regressam a uma sonoridade mais thrash, mantendo ainda assim a sua versatilidade de género num trabalho que se revela mais pesado e rápido do que o seu antecessor.

O arranque para este “Psychosis” é dado por “Solitude”, faixa que dá o mote para todo o álbum: ritmo forte e rápido, vocais graves e guitarras furiosas, num arranjo que a espaços se aproxima do death/black. “Akardos” retoma o groove de “Locust ▼ Lunatic Asylum” ao mesmo tempo que lhe injeta uma dose de heavy metal tradicional por cima do thrash. “Dark Valley”, como o próprio nome sugere, começa com um ritmo arrastado e sujo que ao longo da faixa se vai intercalando com um toque de black ambiente; como se isso não bastasse os Sober Truth ainda lhe imprimem um toque de sludge, resultando numa espécie de receita perfeita para mentes tenebrosas. Toda esta aura negra precisa de um momento de descanso, altura então para a instrumental “Ode To Reality”. “Riven” é um portento de melodia e groove, uma faixa claramente inspirada no thrash mais clássico mas que transpira contemporaneidade graças aos arranjos bem estruturados. “Horizon” consegue pegar nos riffs rápidos ao estilo black metal e mistura-os com thrash metal, adiciona um toque the groove e serve tudo numa espécie de mescla negra; essa ideia de mistura de estilos de pendor mais negro e pesado continua em “Utopia”. Tempo agora para “Sober”, tema que fez parte do anterior “Locust ▼ Lunatic Asylum”, aqui com novo arranjo para se enquadrar na sonoridade mais pesada deste “Psychosis”; se na altura disse que a faixa tinha um toque de electro gótico, aqui com bateria mais rápida, mais guitarras e voz mais forte, acaba por ganhar um toque de industrial. Este é também um exemplo da versatilidade da banda, não só em combinar diversos sub-géneros como também a “reinventar” algo que já tinham criado. Depois de mais um pequeno instrumental (“Dying Dreams”) chegámos à faixa que deu nome ao álbum, “Psychosis”. Em consonância com o título o ritmo aqui aproxima-se mais de um death/doom melódico, com bateria forte e rápida a alternar com momentos mais calmos (uma espécie de episódios psicóticos), onde a variação de voz desempenha também papel importante. O álbum termina com nova música trazida do anterior “Locust ▼ Lunatic Asylum”, “Collapse”. Como que numa lógica “fora de lógica”, esta faixa é acústica e com uma toada mais southern rock, dando a ideia de descanso mental depois de uma dose de peso.

Se na última vez fui apanhado desprevenido por não conhecer os Sober Truth, isso agora não aconteceu porque desde essa altura fiquei fã do seu estilo e mal soube deste novo trabalho tive logo vontade de o escutar e analisar (apenas a falta de tempo não o permitiu mais cedo). Não há muito mais para falar acerca da forma como os Sober Truth compõem, a maneira como conjugam os instrumentos, o ritmo e a voz (desta vez não foquei muito esse pormenor mas é sem dúvida uma das mais-valias da banda), que leva a que produzam trabalhos tão variados mas ao mesmo tempo identificativos do seu estilo.

“Psychosis” is the 4th studio album (5th counting with the EP “New Slavery World”) of German band Sober Truth; 2 years after “Locust ▼ Lunatic Asylum” they return with a more thrashy approach yet maintaining its versatility in genres in a work that reveals itself more heavier and faster than its predecessor.

The start of this “Psychosis” is given by “Solitude”, a track that gives motto for the entire album: strong e fast rhythm, harsh vocals and furious guitars, in a musical arrangement that sometimes gets closer to death/black. “Akardos” takes-back the groove of “Locust ▼ Lunatic Asylum” at the same time injecting a dose of traditional heavy metal over thrash. “Dark Valley”, as the name suggests, starts with a dragged and dirty rhythm that along the track will intersperse with a touch of black ambiance; as if that wasn’t enough Sober Truth induce a touch of sludge, ending up in some sort of recipe for sinister minds. All this black aura needs a moment of rest, so time now for the instrumental “Ode To Reality”. “Riven” is amazing in melody and groove, a track clearly inspired in classical thrash but perspires contemporaneity thanks to well structured arrangements. “Horizon” manages to pick those fast riffs black metal style and blend them with thrash metal, adds a touch of groove and serves all in some sort of black mixture; that idea of darker and heavier styles mixture continues on in “Utopia”. Time now for “Sober”, track that is part of the precious “Locust ▼ Lunatic Asylum”, here with a new arrangement to better fit the heavier sonority of this “Psychosis”; if back then I said that this track add a touch of electro goth, now with faster drums, more guitars and harsher voice, gains a touch of industrial. This is also an example of the band’s versatility, not only combining several sub-genres but also “re-inventing” something they add already created. After another short instrumental (“Dying Dreams”) we come to the track that gave name to the album, “Psychosis”. In accordance with the title the rhythm here approaches more to melodic death/doom, with strong and fast drums alternating with calmer moments (some sort of psychotic episodes), in which the vocal variation as an important role. The album ends with another song brought from “Locust ▼ Lunatic Asylum”, “Collapse”. Like some sort of “out of logic” logic, this track is acoustic and with a southern rock pace, giving the idea of mental rest after a huge dose of heaviness.

If last time I was caught out guard for not knowing Sober Truth, that didn’t happened now because since than I became a fan of their style and as soon as I knew about this work I immediately had the will to listen to it and write about it (only the lack of time prevented me to do it sooner). There isn’t much more to say about the way Sober Truth compose, the way they combine all the instruments, the rhythm and the voice (this time I didn’t focused too much on this detail but is undoubtedly one of the added values of the band) that makes them able to produce such variate works but at the same time definers of their style.
