Há pouco mais de 1 ano atrás escrevi sobre “Astória”, EP de estreia dos Alemães Sweeping Death, e terminei dizendo que a banda poderia ir ainda mais longe num próximo trabalho e nessa altura cá estaria para dar novamente a minha opinião . Pois bem, “In Lucid” já foi lançado e eu cumpro sempre as minhas promessas.
Se anteriormente disse que os Sweeping Death são uma daquelas bandas difíceis de rotular pela sua abrangência musical, isso ficou agora mais complicado. É realmente magnífica a forma como eles conjugam nas suas músicas diversos estilos, o que resulta não só em faixas multifacetadas como em álbuns díspares no seu todo e entre si. Em relação ao anterior “Astoria” verificamos que a banda optou neste trabalho por uma vertente mais melódica e progressiva; essa ideia transparece logo pela introdução “Eulogue” mas também “Blues Funeral” mostra uma banda [ainda mais] madura com uma composição que dá destaque às guitarras e que se mantém “misteriosa” ao longo dos seus quase 6 minutos, onde nunca sabemos se a toada se vai manter num blues mais compassado ou se a qualquer momento vai sair dali um solo demolidor. “Horror Infernal” é a faixa mais agressiva de todo o álbum com uma toada thrash e riffs demolidores. “Suicide of a Chiromantist” combina o thrash com o neoclássico numa faixa onde não falta ainda um toque de progressivo, resultando num perfeito equilíbrio entre peso e melodia. Este é um tema que serve muito bem para mostrar todo o potencial da banda em termos criativos, onde o metal clássico e o contemporâneo se fundem de forma simbiótica na criação de uma ponte intemporal sonora. Depois de um interlúdio em “Purpose” a banda retoma o caminho do progressivo com “Resonanz” e “Antitecture” que antecedem “Lucid Sin”; mantendo a toada progressiva e com um toque de neoclássico, esta faixa consegue soar ao mesmo tempo pesada e melódica intercalando momentos de acalmia com caos total, no fundo um reflexo do tema da faixa e do seu lirísmo. O álbum termina com “Stratus” onde o progressivo assume contornos mais trabalhados e maior uso de breakdowns.
Por esta altura já não se pode negar que os Sweeping Death são músicos talentosos e “In Lucid” é a prova de que uma banda pode explanar o seu estilo musical sem perder a sua essência. Mais do que inovar, ao segundo registo mostram como se pode fazer a diferença sem se tornar diferente.

just over a year ago I wrote about “Astória”, German band Sweeping Death debut EP and ended saying that the band could go even further in a next work and when that time comes I would be here to state my opinion again. Well, “In Lucid” has already been released and I always keep my promises.
If before I’ve said that Sweeping Death are one of those bands hard to label due to their musical wideness, well now it became even more complicated. It’s really magnificent the way they combine different styles in their songs which ends up not only in multifaceted tracks but also in divergent albums in its all and among them. Relating to previous “Astoria” we see the band opted in this work for a more melodic and progressive approach; that idea transpires right in the intro “Eulogue” but also “Blues Funeral” shows [an even more] mature band with a composition that gives more projection to the guitars and remains “mysterious” throughout its nearly 6 minute long, where we can never tell if the tune will keep in a more paced blues of if a killing riff will come out anytime. “Horror Infernal” is the most aggressive track of the entire album with a thrash pace and killer riffs. “Suicide of a Chiromantist” combines thrash with neoclassical in a track where there’s also a touch of progressive, resulting in a perfect balance between weight and melody. This is a song that shows all the band’s potential in creativity, where classical and contemporary metal merge in a symbiotic way to create an ageless sound bridge. After an interlude in “Purpose” the band returns to progressive pace with “Resonanz” and “Antitecture” that precede “Lucid Sin”; maintaining a prog tune and with a touch of neoclassical, this track can at the same time sound heavy and melodic by merging peaceful moments with total chaos, which is a reflection of the track’s theme and its lyrics. The album ends with “Stratus” where prog assumes mode elaborated contours and uses more breakdowns.
At this time is undeniable that Sweeping Death are made of talented musicians and “In Lucid” is the proof that a band can wide their musical style without losing its essence. More than innovating, on this second release they show how to make a difference without becoming different.
