Hoje em dia é normal assistirmos ao regresso de bandas que por um qualquer motivo interromperam o seu percurso musical no passado. Foi o que se passou com os norte Americanos Tribulance que quase duas décadas depois regressam aos lançamentos com “The Aftermath Of Lies”.
Devo confessar que não conhecia a banda nem o seu trabalho de estreia, por isso vou apenas focar-me neste último lançamento. Gosto sempre de fazer uma pequena pesquisa antes de escrever, para perceber um pouco da história e da sonoridade; logo aqui fiquei um pouco confuso porque os vi rotulados como banda thrash, rock/metal e até mesmo power. É o problema dos rótulos, tanto podem ajudar como confundir ainda mais… nada melhor do que começar a ouvir “The Aftermath Of Lies” para ver ao que soa.
Ao fim de algumas músicas deu para perceber de onde vem a confusão de alguns media; é preciso enquadrar a banda na sua génese e à altura da sua formação não havia tantos sub-géneros daí aos ouvidos de hoje soarem a muita coisa diferente. Se para muitas bandas contemporâneas demasiadas influências podem resultar em algo confuso, estes senhores mostram ter a lição estudada e equilibram bem a trilogia peso/melodia/ritmo. Ao longo de todo o álbum podemos escutar várias referências; “Oblivious” abre o álbum ao ritmo do heavy mais tradicional mas com forte influência thrash, “Conflict” arranca com um riff que faz lembrar Judas Priest mas que rapidamente se transforma num ritmo mais up tempo, a espaços alternando com partes mais down tempo (consonante com o conflito do tema) mas conseguindo ainda assim manter constante um certo groove. A faixa que dá nome ao álbum é também uma das melhores, com guitarras fortes e compassadas e solo orelhudo; aqui aproveito para referir também a voz de Mike que com o seu timbre melódico e forte traz um certo revivalismo, encaixando perfeitamente nas composições. “Initiation” vai buscar inspiração ao metal Teutónico, com guitarras galopantes e pesadas, onde também se destaca o baixo. “Deny The Pain”, “Cause and Effect”, “Enamored” e “Walk the Talk” são claramente 4 faixas de inspiração thrash, variando em ritmo e velocidade, esta última maioritariamente na versão mais rápida do thrash e com um refrão que me faz lembrar Suicidal Tendencies.
Tribulance são uma banda cujas composições são fortemente inspiradas pelo thrash mas que combinam outros elementos, resultando em faixas pesadas (por vezes parecem roçar o doom), com riffs de guitarra apelativos e orelhudos, muito groove (atendendo a uma entrevista que li deles e a algumas passagens do álbum, arrisco a dizer que o metal rap é uma forte influência) e não menos importante, uma voz que se destaca. Quando tudo isto é combinado com peso e medida tem tudo para resultar como se pode escutar neste “The Aftermath Of Lies”.

Nowadays is usual for us to watch the returns of bands that, for some reason, ended their musical path in the past. That’s what happened with north Americans Tribulance who almost two decades later are back to new releases with “The Aftermath Of Lies”.
I must confess that I didn’t knew the band nor its debut work so I’m just going to focus on this last release. I always enjoy do some research prior to writing, to understand a little bit more of their history and sonority; I immediately became a bit confused because I saw them labeled as thrash, rock/metal and even power metal band. That’s the thing with labels, they can either help or confuse even more… nothing better than to start listening to “The Aftermath Of Lies” to see what it sounds like.
After some songs you could see were all the confusion of some media came from; we must place the band in its genesis and at the time of their origin there weren’t that many sub genres hense at today’s ears they sound to a lot of different things. If for some contemporary bands too many influences can result in something confusing, this gents show they know their lesson well and balance well between weight/melody/rhythm. Throughout the album we can listen to several references; “Oblivious” opens the album at the sound of a more traditional heavy metal but with strong thrash influence, “Conflict” starts with a riff that reminds Judas Priest but rapidly transforms itself in a more uptempo rhythm, at spaces alternating with more down tempo parts (consonant with the song name) yet thus maintaining constant a certain groove. The song that names the album is also one of the best ones, with strong paced guitars and a catchy riff; here I take the opportunity to also mention Mike’s voice which with its strong and melodic timbre brings a certain revival, perfectly fitting the compositions. “Initiation” gets inspired by Teutonic metal, with heavy galloping guitars where I also highlight the bass. “Deny The Pain”, “Cause and Effect”, “Enamored” and “Walk the Talk” are 4 tracks clearly inspired by thrash, varying in terms of rhythm and velocity, with the last one mainly in the more speed version of thrash and with chorus that kind of remind me Suicidal Tendencies.
Tribulance are a band whose compositions are strongly inspired by thrash but combine other elements, ending up in heavy tracks (that sometimes borders doom), with appealing and catchy guitar riffs, lots of groove (given that in an interview I read and some passages in the album, I take my chance saying that rap metal is also a strong influence) and not so less important, a voice that excels. When all of this is combined within bounds has everything to succeed has we can listen in this “The Aftermath Of Lies”.
