Guess not all the bands like our work...

Those who follow Metal In Portugal project and, most importantly those who know me personally, know the dedication and professionalism I have in what I do, even though I don't have specific training in any of the areas I operate in and they also know that what makes me proud of is the recognition for the work done. This can be seen by everyone through the comments in the posts but there are also other thanks: artists who follow the page, artists who share the work done, artists who contact me asking permission to use those works (photos, texts, videos) as a means of promoting themselves. And before you think it is only the "little" bands that do it, I assure you that much of this recognition comes from those who have been around for a long time and know how to value the work of those who make it a passion. By now you must be asking why this outburst… well, there is always the reverse of the medal, there is always that band that does not gladly accept what has been done.

This weekend I went to an event for the first time, not as a “pro” but just for a walk, being with friends eating, drinking and listening to music. But the habit is so much that I do not leave home without the machines, always ends up giving that desire to take a picture or a video. That's what happened, not all bands but some (I haven't seen all the concerts). Today I decided to post the videos I made at this event on my YouTube channel and, not to my surprise, I have a comment from the band itself asking who gave me permission to record and demanding the immediate removal of the video under the threat of complaining and consequent legal action. An aside about the channel that has been running since 2013: I put videos of all the bands I saw, in a logic of spreading them and related events. Just once I had 1 video blocked because it involved Sony and it is already known that the big companies are more "complicated". I don't get money for them, not from Youtube, not from promoters/publishers, nor from bands. Well, I decided to contact the band through Facebook to try to understand why, because in a survey I found some more videos of other events where the same band performed. The conversation did not begin in the best way, for on the other side came the same arrogant tone of contempt for those who contacted them; this “episode” has been overtaken by the caller repeatedly apologizing for the way he responded. All resolved, I then proceeded to the fundamental question; here lies my astonishment at the arguments presented (in no specific order):

. The publisher is very reserved regarding the promotion of this band - they are options and strategies of each one that must be respected, however being a young band I think it is in their interest that any publicity to them and their work brings fruits. Since my channel is not a “case study” in terms of audience, it can however reach many parts of the world also because I use several content sharing channels.
. The videos I saw were authorized and previously viewed by the publisher - well, unless exceptions provided, I usually only make 1 video of 1 song (I don't record whole concerts as I was asked) and the song is always random (in some cases I capture several times the same song of a particular band). The videos that exist are 15 minutes long, 25 minutes and so on… well, if a publisher prohibits 1 song but allows several, then there is something beyond logic. Besides 1 of the videos had a sound/picture quality that can not be considered the best; and this is where it gives me perplexity because my filming is quite superior to that one, and I wonder if they will even have paid for it. One thing is for sure, if you want mine you will have to pay for it!
. They mentioned that the promotion, the material and the way they do it is entirely their responsibility and that of the publisher, finishing with the remark “it's all legal” - of course, and that's why I immediately removed the video in all publications. However, I warned that I also took pictures of them, which being done in a publicly accessible place without restrictions gives me the right to publish them. But I will not do so simply because they do not deserve me to waste time editing them and being able to enjoy quality material.

The matter was settled, I removed the video as requested and they thanked for my understanding. However, my indignation at the superior way in which they started the approach, the peremptory way in which they refused to keep the video available and, as mentioned in the beginning, the attitude of a band that still has much to prove, made me write this text. It also serves as a warning to my “professional colleagues” to guard against possible (fortunately few) less sympathetic band/publisher attitudes. I omit the name of the band/publisher because the subject is closed, I wish them very a successful career but certainly without my help; I also omit the name of the event as it may give rise to comments that will be completely unjustifiable as this was a situation unrelated to them and I will continue to support them as much as possible, as hitherto.

PS: Sometimes I read comments about the state of the National underground, about disagreements between bands, promoters and the like, small naughtiness and less praiseworthy attitudes, leaving the idea that "abroad is better". So, as you can see, it can be worse out there ... the underground only advances with one voice, don't forget that.
