Status Quo @ Campo Pequeno

Quase que tínhamos de esperar tantos anos quantos os álbuns da discografia dos Status Quo para os recebermos novamente em Portugal. Felizmente não foi preciso tanto e ao fim de 30 anos voltaram para um grande concerto que teve lugar no passado dia 29 de Setembro, no Campo Pequeno.

Perante um recinto [quase] cheio, entraram ao som de “Caroline” que logo colocou todos de pé relegando as cadeiras para meros adereços. Aliás, quando vimos que toda a plateia tinha cadeiras achámos algo estranho, talvez tivesse a ver com a “média de idades” esperada… Cedo se provou uma opção errada, não só porque se viam muitos jovens mas também porque não há outra forma de assistir a um concerto destes senhores que não seja em pé! Este concerto teve maior foco nos trabalhos da banda na década de 70 com maior destaque para “Hello” (1973) e “On The Level” (1975), havendo também tempo para algumas faixas mais “recentes” como “The Oriental” (2002) e “Beginning of the End” (2007). Pelo meio iam dirigindo algumas palavras de apreço e agradecimento aos fãs presentes mas sem grandes delongas porque o importante aqui era o rock n’ roll. Durante pouco mais de uma hora ouviram-se temas como “Backwater”, “Army” ou “Roll Over”, terminando ao som de 2 grandes clássicos: “Whatever You Want” e “Rockin’ All Over The World”. Depois de uma estrondosa salva de palmas regressaram ao palco para um encore com “Don’t Waste My Time” e “Bye Bye Johnny”.

A espera foi longa mas valeu a pena. Não é todos os dias que podemos assistir a concertos de bandas com uma carreira de 50 anos, ainda por cima com esta vitalidade. A entrega do público é digna de se sublinhar, dançando de princípio ao fim e cantando com a banda os temas mais emblemáticos. Parabéns à Rádio M80 pela iniciativa e à Senhores do Ar pela oportunidade dada.

We almost had to wait as many years as the number of albums in Status Quo’s discography to welcome them again in Portugal. Fortunately not quite as much was needed and after 30 years they came back to a great show that took place at Campo Pequeno, Lisbon, on September 29th.

Before an [almost] full precinct they started at the sound of “Caroline” which immediately made everyone stand up relegating the chairs to mere props. In fact, when we saw that the entire room was filled with chairs we thought it was odd, maybe it had something to do with expected “age average”... Soon it revealed a wrong choice, not only because we could see lots of young folks but also because there isn’t any other way to attend a concert from this gents except standing up! This gig focused in the albums from the 70’s with bigger highlight to “Hello” (1973) and “On The Level” (1975), having also time to some more “recent” tracks such as “The Oriental” (2002) and “Beginning of the End” (2007). In between they were expressing words of appreciation and gratitude to the fans but without delays because the most important was rock n’ roll. During more than an hour we have heard songs such as “Backwater”, “Army” or “Roll Over”, ending with 2 great classics: “Whatever You Want” and “Rockin’ All Over The World”. After a tremendous ovation they returned for an encore with “Don’t Waste My Time” and “Bye Bye Johnny”.

The waiting was long but worth it. It’s not everyday that we can watch concerts of bands with a career of 50 years, even more with all this energy. The audience commitment is due of notice, dancing from beginning to end and singing along with the band the more iconical songs. Congratulations to Rádio M80 for the initiative and to Senhores do Ar for the opportunity given.
