Há algumas semanas atrás fiz referência aos Brasileiros Navidon e ao single “Factory of the Foolish Boys”, retirado do EP de estreia “Mindfolded”. Chegou agora o momento de conhecermos um pouco mais a banda que tem Portugal como destino para alguns concertos ainda este ano.
Davi: Boa tarde Navidon e sejam bem-vindos à Metal Em Portugal.
Navidon: Boa tarde Davi, e a todos os leitores do Metal em Portugal. É um prazer!
D: Vocês ainda são desconhecidos do povo Português, portanto podem começar por se apresentarem aos nossos leitores.
N: Bom... Somos um power-trio formado na cidade de Juazeiro do Norte, Ceará, no Nordeste do Brasil. Me chamo Valbert, sou o vocalista e baixista da banda; Pablo Diego é o guitarrista e Hugo Alexandre o baterista. É sempre difícil definir um estilo de som, mas acho que o nosso tem um pouco de nossas principais influências, como Rush, AC/DC, Thin Lizzy e Black Sabbath; e essas influências convergem para uma proposta de show que busque uma sinergia entre banda e público, gostamos de fazer o público se sentir parte da performance da banda, o que de fato é primordial para nós. Rock tem a ver com energia e é isso que procuramos viver e transmitir no palco junto a quem assiste aos nossos shows.
D: Quando se pensa em Brasil musical, a nossa mente transporta-nos logo para outro tipo de sons que não o rock. Como é a cena rock/metal em Crajubar? É complicado ser-se diferente na vossa região/país?
N: O Brasil é muito conhecido por sua pluralidade de sons e estilos e isso é muito bom, mas claro que para a cena do rock é um pouco difícil, especialmente onde vivemos. O Estado do Ceará é considerado a “terra do forró”, então enfrentamos uma resistência até mesmo sociocultural muito grande por conta disso. As casas de shows, bares, empresários e produtores priorizam projetos que agradem ao público de uma forma geral, e o rock não é uma das prioridades. Existe uma demanda para o consumo do rock, mas ainda é pequena, e isso acarreta em apresentações esporádicas, o que é um problema por um lado. Por outro, existe uma mobilização de bandas do mesmo estilo que estão tentando mudar este conceito, mas isto leva tempo, e nós estamos juntos nessa empreitada. Mas queremos encontrar nosso público onde quer que ele esteja... Se ele estiver em Portugal, será fantástico.
D: Optaram por cantar em Inglês; é certo que isso pode abrir mais portas a nível internacional mas temos casos de bandas rock Brasileiras que singraram a cantar em Português. Qual o motivo desta vossa escolha?
N: Optamos por cantar em inglês principalmente porque o nosso estilo não se encaixa dentro do rock nacional brasileiro. Até tentamos no início do projeto compor em português, mas as músicas simplesmente não “encaixavam”, entende? E, claro, como inglês é a principal ferramenta de comunicação global, obviamente temos mais chances de alcançar nosso público, apesar das dificuldades e da quantidade de trabalhos excepcionais que ouvimos por aí. É difícil chegarmos ao ouvido do nosso público porque existem muitos trabalhos com o mesmo intuito, mas acreditamos que com um pouco de paciência e muito empenho, podemos sim conseguir isso.
D: Para este ano têm planeadas datas em Portugal; já as podem divulgar ou ainda é cedo?
N: Podemos divulgar sim... Estaremos do dia 04 ao dia 06 de Julho em Lisboa para shows respectivamente em Tokyo, Auditório LEAP e EKA Palace; e no dia 08 de Julho estaremos no Estudantino Café, em Viseu. Ouvimos falar muito bem desses lugares, onde o público participa bastante dos shows. Estamos ansiosos com isso.
D: O que esperam encontrar cá e no resto da Europa? Como pensam que a vossa música vai (está a ser) recebida?
N: Nossa expectativa é a melhor possível. Não porque achamos que depois desses shows vai chover propostas de gravadoras ou produtoras, mas porque é a nossa porta de entrada para o nosso público. Culturalmente, bandas autorais são bem recebidas na Europa, e isso nos motiva. Queremos fazer desses 4 shows algo memorável para nós e para o público que irá assistir. É a realização de um sonho antigo, tanto pessoal quanto profissional, e isso é o que mais importa para nós. É claro que, se por acaso nosso projeto for realmente abraçado pelo público e surgirem outras oportunidades de shows, como queremos que surja, ficaremos bem felizes. Mas nossa preocupação, no momento, é fazer desses 4 shows um belo cartão de visitas para a Navidon.
D: Navidon, agradeço a vossa disponibilidade para esta conversa. Deixo sempre a última palavra aos meus entrevistados, façam-se ouvir.
N: Davi, foi um prazer ter tido a oportunidade de bater esse papo com você sobre o um pouco do nosso trabalho. Vocês (Davi e leitores) não fazem ideia do quanto estamos felizes com essa oportunidade e que esperamos que vocês compareçam aos shows para curtirem um rock cheio de riffs e energia junto com a gente. Parafraseando nossa carta de apresentação: “A proposta da Navidon continua simples: lembrar o verdadeiro espírito do rock para as pessoas, a crença de que podemos mudar o mundo inteiro com uma boa ideia, algumas palavras, grandes canções e um show de arrepiar!” Obrigado a todos!

A few weeks ago I made reference to Brazilian band Navidon and their single “Factory of the Foolish Boys”, taken from the debut EP “Mindfolded”. Now came the time for us to know more about the band that has Portugal has destination for some gigs later this year.
Davi: Good afternoon Navidon and welcome to Metal Em Portugal.
Navidon: Good afternoon Davi and all Metal Em Portugal readers. It’s a pleasure!
D: You are still unknown for the Portuguese people so go ahead and start by presenting yourselves to our readers.
N: Well… we are a power trio founded on the city of Juazeiro do Norte, Ceará, Northeast Brazil. I’m Valbert, lead singer and band bassist; Pablo Diego is the guitar player and Hugo Alexandre the drummer. It’s always difficult to define how a band sounds like but I think our sonority has a little of all our influences, such as Rush, AC/DC, Thin Lizzy and Black Sabbath, and those influences converge into an opportunity to create synergies between ourselves and the audience at out gigs because we like to make the public feel as part of the band’s performance, which is foremost important to us. Rock has to do with energy and that’s what we aim to live and transmit on stage to the audience.
D: When we think about music in Brazil, our mind leads us right to sonorities apart from rock. How’s the rock/metal scene in Crajubar? Is it difficult to be different in your country/region?
N: Brazil is known for its sound and styles plurality which is a good thing, but of course for the rock scene it’s a little bit difficult especially where we live. The State of Ceará is considered the “land of forró” so we face a fierce resistance because of that, even socio-cultural speaking. The venues, managers and producers prioritize projects that appeal to the general public and rock is not a priority. There’s a demand for rock although still short, which leads to fewer live appearances, making it a problem to all of us. On the other hand there’s a movement of bands among the same style that are trying to change things but it takes time and we are helping that cause. But we want to find our public no matter where it is… if he’s in Portugal that would be fantastic.
D: You chose to sing in English; it’s true that that can open more doors on an international level but we have cases of Brazilian rock band that were successful singing in Portuguese. What the reason behind your choice?
N: We chose to sing in English mainly because our style doesn’t fit in traditional Brazilian rock. In the beginning of our project we even tried to write in Portuguese but the songs simply wouldn’t “fit in”, got it? And of course, with English being the major tool for worldwide communication we obviously have more chances to meet our audience, despite the difficulties and the number of exceptional works we listen around. It’s difficult for us to reach our audience’s ears simply because there are lots of others with the same goal but we believe that, with a little bit of patience and hard work, we can get there.
D: For this year you have dates planned in Portugal; can you reveal them or it’s just too soon?
N: We can reveal them… we’ll play in Lisbon from July 4th to 6th, respectively on Tokyo, Auditório LEAP and EKA Palace; and on the 8th we’ll play at Estudantinos Café, in Viseu. We have heard good things from those places were the crowd is very participative in the shows. We’re looking forward for that.
D: What do you expect to find here and the rest of Europe? How do you feel your music will (is being) be received?
N: We expect nothing but the best. Not that because of those shows there’ll be pouring proposals from record labels or promoters but because this is our gateway to the public. Culturally speaking, original bands are well welcomed in Europe and that motivates us. We want to make these 4 shows memorable for us and for the ones attending. And the making of an old dream, both personal and professional, that’s what matters the most for us. Of course, if for some unforeseen reason our project is really embraced by the public and appear opportunities for other dates as we wish to, we’ll be really happy. But for the moment, our concern is to make those 4 shows our beautiful welcoming card for Navidon.

N: Davi, it was a pleasure having this opportunity to talk to you about our work. You (Davi and readers) have no idea how happy we are with this opportunity and we hope that you attend our shows and enjoy some good rock filled with hooks and energy with us.
