Apesar de já existirem como banda desde 2004, apenas no final do ano passado os The Chapter lançaram o seu álbum de estreia, “Angels & Demons”, o sucessor do EP “Into The Abyss” de 2006.
Para quem não conhece o seu som basta começar a escutar o tema homónimo para logo se perceber que as suas composições se revestem de uma essência mais negra; as suas raízes estão bem firmadas no black/death/doom mas com um cuidado ao nível da composição que os afastam do peso desmedido. É facilmente perceptível a variação de ritmo e estilo em diversas faixas, sendo que em “Angels & Demons” funciona bem em conformidade com o tema da canção. Essa alternância continua a surtir bons resultados em “Shattered Emotions”, naquela que é principalmente uma faixa mais melancólica e arrastada mas que termina em crescendo rítmico, qual catarse emocional. “Aenima Vipera” suporta a sua base rítmica nas guitarras bem guiadas pela bateria, apresentando ainda o primeiro grande solo do álbum, isto tudo numa faixa que se apresenta como uma das mais animadas. Animação é o que não temos em “Librarian (Sorrow In Extinction)” com o ritmo a entrar numa toada mais downtempo, em consonância com a temática lúgubre da letra; nesta faixa consegue-se perceber bem que o timbre de voz de Pedro Rodrigues se assemelha bastante ao de Fernando Ribeiro dos Moonspell. À entrada da segunda metade da faixa voltamos a escutar nova boa combinação de tempos e ritmos, decrescendo novamente para um final em ligeiro fade out. A partir daqui as restantes faixas exploram muito bem a vertente mais doom/gótica da banda. Numas temos um maior destaque para a melodia enquanto que noutras o foco é na melancolia, mas tudo feito com equilíbrio entre peso e negritude em que a voz feminina (“To Live For”) funciona muito bem como catarse à toada mais depressiva.
Todo este tempo que os The Chapter tiveram para compôr “Angels & Demons” serviu para conjugarem muito bem todas as suas influências (Paradise Lost, Opeth, Moonspell, Katatonia, …), de modo a resultarem num manto de escuridão mas com um toque de romantismo sombrio, como que se de um conto saído da mente de Poe se tratasse. Vale a pena esperar por obras que nos retorcem a alma e nos ajudam a purgar demónios.

Although they exist has a band since 2004 only late last year The Chapter released their debut album “Angels & Demons”, sophomore for the 2006 EP “Into The Abyss”.
For those who don’t know their sound just need to listen to the homonymous track to quickly perceive that their compositions are wrapped within a dark essence; their roots are well firmed in black/death/doom but with a careness regarding compositions that aparts them from excessive weight. It’s easily noticeable the variation in rhythm and style in several tracks, being that “Angels & Demons” works well accordingly to the song title. This alternation keeps paying off in “Shattered Emotions”, a track that is mainly melancholic and protracted but ends with a rhythmic increasing, like an emotional catharsis. “Aenima Vipera” braces its rhythmic base in the guitars well led by the drums, also presenting the album first great solo all of this in a track that presents itself as one of the most lively. Liveliness is one thing we can’t find in “Librarian (Sorrow In Extinction)” starting with down-tempo paced rhythm in consonance with the gloomy theme expressed in the lyrics; in this track we can perceive that Pedro Rodrigues vocal timbre is very similar to Fernando Ribeiro from Moonspell. At the beginning of the track’ second half we listen again to a good combination of tempo and rhythms, decreasing again to a slightly fade out finale. From here on the remaining tracks explore more the band’s goth/doom approach. In some we have an highlight in the melody, on others the focus go to the melancholy but all with balance between weight and darkness in which the female vocals (“To Live For”) works very well in some sort of catharsis to the depressed pace.
All this time The Chapter had to compose “Angels & Demons” was well used by the band to combine all their influences (Paradise Lost, Opeth, Moonspell, Katatonia, …), has to result in a cloak of darkness but with a touch of bleaking romanticism, like a tale taken out of Poe’s mind. It’s worth waiting for works that twist our soul and help us purge demons.
