Apesar de ser ainda de trabalho para muitos, este segundo dia do Vagos Metal Fest estava já esgotado algum tempo antes de começar o evento. A abrir estiveram os In Vein que continuam a mostrar o seu “Resurrect”, de onde “Satan” continua a ser o tema mais requisitado e que mais público move. Perto do final da sua atuação tiveram de dividir atenções com o grupo de idosos do Centro Comunitário da Gafanha do Carmo que entretanto tinham chegado ao recinto. Mesmo correndo o risco de soar tendencioso, devo dizer que Vagos já merecia os Blame Zeus; apesar de não serem uma banda de metal, a coesão e qualidade musical dos seus elementos faz com que soem com o peso necessário para cativar um público mais abrangente. Além dos temas retirados dos seus dois trabalhos apresentaram ainda um novo, “Deja Vu”, a figurar no próximo registo. Quem também está a preparar um novo trabalho são os Invoke, agora com Pedro Dias na voz. Bom concerto com óbvio destaque para o único LP da banda, “Somnium Paradox”, que contou também com a presença de Muffy a cantar no tema “Hall of Mirrors”. Há cerca de 16 anos que os Dollar Llama mostram um stoner/sludge cheio de força e groove, aliás basta ouvir o último “Juggernaut” para se perceber isso. Esperava-se por isso um concerto animado e não foi preciso aguardar muito para ouvir as palavras de ordem de James Thunder: “Aqui em cima suasse, aí em baixo tem de ser igual”... nada mais a dizer, bastava ver a poeira no ar para se perceber a alegria que reinava em frente ao palco. Primeiro percalço com as bandas (mais adiante e nos próximos textos iremos dar conta dos restantes), os Masterplan viram o seu voo sofrer um atraso o que fez com que a organização tivesse de alterar o alinhamento, passando assim os Ratos Do Porão a tocar antes. A mítica banda Brasileira liderada por João Gordo era há muito esperada pelo público Português que não se fez rogado e, à voz de comando de malhas como “Lei do Silêncio” ou “Morrer”, iam respondendo com alegria e muita animação. João não se cansava de elogiar o público e de salientar que os Ratos do Porão são uma banda que canta orgulhosamente em Português. Agora sim, os Masterplan subiam ao palco para mostrar que o seu power metal se mantém fresco, com o mérito a dever-se à muita experiência de Grapow ao comando da guitarra mas igualmente aos restantes elementos, sempre animados e brincalhões. Com uma discografia que engloba 9 lançamentos, entre álbuns e EPs, para Vagos trouxeram ainda uma cover dos Helloween para a música “Time of the Oath“. Também de regresso a Vagos estiveram os Moonspell, desta vez para mostrarem o seu mais recente “1755”. Tudo se conjugava para que este fosse mais um grande concerto da banda mas infelizmente novo contratempo com o som quase deitava tudo por terra. Foi notório que Fernando Ribeiro ficou “afetado” com essa situação (não sabemos se estaria cansado do regresso da República Checa ou se haveria algo mais), mas o que é certo é que o seu humor não era dos melhores. Felizmente o concerto decorreu sem mais problemas onde, para além dos novos temas, tocaram alguns mais antigos como “Opium” ou “Awake”, terminando obviamente em grande comunhão com o público ao som de “Alma Mater”. Pela mão dos norte-Americanos Converge voltamos ao hardcore. Não sendo propriamente o nossa estilo de eleição, não podemos deixar de salientar a efusividade demonstrada em cima do palco por parte de uma banda que anda nisto há quase três décadas e é uma referência no género. Quase duas décadas depois os Cradle of Filth regressam a Portugal para um concerto há muito esperado pelos fãs. Arrancando ao som de “Gilded Cunt” seguida de “Beneath the Howling Stars”, o que parecia ser um arranque fulgurante esmoreceu no final da faixa com mais uma quebra de luz. Na mente de todos temia-se o pior mas felizmente não passou de um susto, com Dani Filth a regressar pouco depois e a brincar com a situação dizendo “não culpem a organização, nós é que não gostamos do fim da música e mandamos sempre tudo abaixo.” A partir daqui o concerto decorreu sem sobressaltos com a banda a desfilar uma série de músicas conhecidas e apreciadas pelo público, como sendo “Bathory Aria”, “Her Ghost in the Fog” ou “Born in a Burial Gown”. É conhecida a estreita ligação entre a banda Britânica e os Moonspell, não sendo pois de estranhar que Dani lhes tenha dedicado várias músicas durante o concerto. Depois de cerca de hora e meia com hinos dedicados à escuridão, a “missa nefasta” continuou pela mão dos Attic. Com um cenário apropriado montado no palco, foi um deleite ouvir Meister Cagliostro evangelizar os presentes com “The Hound of Heaven” ou “Die Engelmacherin”, entre outros. Uma estreia muito boa para uma banda de grande qualidade. Já a hora ía adiantada e o melhor da festa ainda estava para vir. Os Serrabulho movem realmente multidões e desta vez não foi diferente. Perante uma plateia que rondaria as 3/4 mil pessoas deram uma festa como só eles sabem (e desta vez fizeram-se acompanhar por convidados, o que deu um colorido diferente). O lirismo poderá não ser o melhor e as melodias não têm de ser muito elaboradas, mas a loucura é sempre muita e o público responde à altura. A terminar uma das bandas de tributo que se estrearam nesta edição do VMF, Abaixo Cu Sistema a tocar System of a Down; após o final do concerto a música ficou a cargo de António Freitas.

Although for many this was still a working day, Vagos Metal Fest 2nd day was already sold out days before the event started. Opening were In Vein that keep showing “Resurrect” from where “Satan” is the most demanded song and more audience attracts. Near the end of their gig they had to share attentions with the elderly of Centro Comunitário da Gafanha do Carmo, who in the meanwhile had arrived to the precinct. Even though risking to sound biases, I must say that Vagos already deserved Blame Zeus; although they’re not a metal band the cohesion and musical quality of their members makes them capable of sounding heavy enough, thus captivating a wider range of audience. Besides songs taken from their two albums also showed a new one, “Deja Vu”, to appear in a next record. Who’s also preparing a new work are Invoke, this time with Pedro Dias in the voice. Good gig with obvious highlight for the band’s EP “Somnium Paradox”, who also had Muffy’s presence on stage to sing “Hall of Mirrors”. Nearly 16 years his how long Dollar Llama have been showing a stoner/sludge filled with strength and groove, in fact you just need to listen to the latest “Juggernaut” to perceive just that. For that a cheerful gig was expected and we didn’t have to wait to long to listen James Thunder’s mottoes: “Up here we sweat, down there has to be the same”... nothing more to say, we just needed to watch the dust turmoil to understand the joy in front of the stage. First mishap with the bands (further ahead and on the next reviews we’ll tell you more about others), Masterplan saw their flight to suffer a delay with forced the organization to change the alignment, putting Ratos Do Porão before them. The mythical Brazilian band headed by João Gordo was expected by Portuguese fans for a long time and at the command voice of songs such as “Lei do Silêncio” ou “Morrer”, they did not hesitate to respond with cheer and joy. João wouldn’t stop thanking the crowd and empathizing the fact that Ratos do Porão are a band who proudly sings in Portuguese. Now, Masterplan got on stage to show that their power metal still sounds fresh, with main merit to be given to Grapow’s vast experience in the guitar but also to the remaining band members, always lively and playful. With 9 releases in their discography, among EPs and albums, to Vagos they still brought a cover for Helloween’s “Time of the Oath“. Also returning to Vagos were Moonspell this time to show the most recent “1755”. Everything was fitting to make this another great concert but unfortunately another setback with the sound almost overturned it. It was clearly visible that Fernando Ribeiro got “affected” with the situation (we don’t know if he was tired from the return of Czech Republic or if there was something else), but what was certain is that his humor was not on its best. Fortunately the gig went on without further problems where, besides newer songs they played older ones such as “Opium” or “Awake”, obviously ending in great communion with the audience at the sound of “Alma Mater”. Guided by north American Converge we returned to hardcore. Not exactly being our genre of choice, we can’t let to point out the effusiveness showed on stage by a band that’s been doing this for almost three decades besides being a reference in the genre. Almost two decades after their last visit Cradle of Filth return to Portugal to a long waited gig by the fans. Starting at the sound of “Gilded Cunt” followed by “Beneath the Howling Stars”, what seemed to be a dazzling start waned after the end of the song with another power shortage. In everybody’s mind the worst was expected but fortunately it was only a fright, with Dani returning afterwards and joking with the situation saying “don’t blame the organization, we just don’t like the end of this song so we wreck it all down”. From this moment onward the gig went smoothly with the band performing a series of known songs and praised by the audience like “Bathory Aria”, “Her Ghost in the Fog” or “Born in a Burial Gown”. It’s well known the link between the British band and Moonspell, therefore not surprising that Dani had dedicated to them several songs during the concert. After nearly a hour an a half with hymns dedicated to the darkness, the “nefarious mass” went on by the hand of Attic. With an appropriated scenario sent on stage it was with delight that we heard Meister Cagliostro evangelize the ones there with “The Hound of Heaven” or “Die Engelmacherin”, among others. A very good premiere for such a quality band. It was late hour and the best was yet to come. Serrabulho really move crowds and this time wasn’t different. Before a crowd of 3/4 thousand people gave a party only they could (and this time they made themselves accompanied by guests, which gave a different touch to the gig). The lyrics may not be their best and the melodies don’t have to be too much elaborated but the craziness is always high and the crowd responds adequately. To finish one of the tribute bands that debuted in this VMF, Abaixo Cu Sistema playing System of a Down; after that, António Freitas was in charge of the sound.
